Den 48. sæson af Formel 1 bestod af 17 Grand Prix og løb fra 9. marts til 26. oktober 1997 . Jacques Villeneuve blev verdensmester , Williams-Reno- holdet vandt Constructors' Cup . Michael Schumacher blev frataget alle sine point i denne sæson for en kollision med Villeneuve i Jerez. Imidlertid forblev protokollerne for løbene og stillingerne for Constructors' Championship (hvor Williams-holdet vandt) uændrede.

Ændringer i holdopstillingen

Mild Seven Benetton Renault: Alexander Wurz stod for Gerhard Berger fra det canadiske grandprix til det britiske grandprix på grund af sidstnævntes sygdom.
Prost Gauloises Blondes: Fra det franske grandprix til det østrigske grandprix udfyldte Jarno Trulli for Olivier Panis, som fik brækkede ben i et styrt ved det canadiske grandprix.
Red Bull Sauber Petronas: I slutningen af Monacos Grand Prix blev Nicola Larini fyret og erstattet af Gianni Morbidelli, som til gengæld blev erstattet af Norberto Fontana ved det franske, britiske og europæiske Grand Prix.
Minardi Team: Efter det canadiske Grand Prix blev Jarno Trulli inviteret til at konkurrere på Prost-holdet, og Tarso Márquez overtog hans plads.
MasterCard Lola Ford-holdet trak sig fra mesterskabet efter to runder.
