Estetrol (E4) er et svagt østrogen steroidhormon, som kun findes i forhøjede niveauer under graviditeten [1] [2] . Det produceres udelukkende af fosterets lever [1] . Estetrol er nært beslægtet med østriol , som også er et svagt østrogen, der kun findes i store mængder under graviditeten [1] [2] . Sammen med østradiol (E2), østron (E1) og østriol (E3) er østretrol det vigtigste østrogen i kroppen kun under graviditet [1] .
Ud over sin rolle som et naturligt hormon er estetrol under klinisk udvikling til brug som et lægemiddel, såsom i overgangsalderens hormonbehandling .
