Viscount Gormanston er en titel i Peerage of Ireland , som holdes af familien Preston.
Historie
Titlen Viscount Gormanston blev skabt den 7. august 1478 for Robert Preston, 4. baron Gormanston (1435–1503). Titlen på Viscount Gormanston er den ældste viscount titel i Irland. Preston-familien nedstammer fra Sir Robert Preston (d. 1396 ), der tjente som Lord Chancellor of Irland . Mellem 1365 og 1370 blev han skabt til Baron Gormanston i Peerage of Ireland . Hans søn, Christopher Preston, 2. baron Gormanston (ca. 1354-1422), spillede en fremtrædende rolle i statsanliggender og blev arresteret for forræderi i 1418 . Hans oldebarn, Robert Preston, 4. baron Gormanston (1435-1503), var vicesteward for Irland (1493-1494). I 1478 blev titlen Viscount Gormanston ( Peerage of Ireland ) skabt til ham. Hans efterkommer, Janico Preston, 7. Viscount Gormanston (d. 1691 ), var tilhænger af den afsatte kong James II Stuart og blev forbudt efter den glorværdige revolution .
Janico Preston, de jure 12. Viscount Gormanston (1775-1860), hjalp med at slå det irske oprør i 1798 ned . I 1800 blev Jenico Preston kaldet til det irske overhus som den 12. Viscount Gormanston. Fra og med 2014 er titelindehaveren hans oldebarn, Genico Nicholas Dudley Preston, 17. Viscount Gormanston (f. 1939 ), som modtog titlen viscount i en alder af syv måneder, da hans far døde under det franske felttog i Verdenskrigen II .
