Rakshabandhan

Rakshabandhan eller Rakhibandhan  er en populær hinduistisk festival, der fejres på fuldmånedagen i måneden Shravan (juli-august). [1] [2] [3] På denne dag satte søstrene deres brødres hænder hellige bandager (kaldet "rakkha"), designet til at beskytte dem mod onde kræfter, og den unge mand giver til gengæld sin søster en gave og forpligter sig til slutningen af ​​sit liv beskytte hende og nedladende hende. Ved afslutningen af ​​ceremonien giver bror og søster hinanden forskellige slik. Samme dag skifter brahminerne deres hellige brahmintråd til en ny.

Ritualet udføres ikke nødvendigvis mellem søskende; en pige, ved at binde en rakkha til en ung mands hånd, kan derved blive hans adoptivsøster. Der var mange tilfælde i indisk historie , hvor kvinder på denne måde bad om beskyttelse og protektion fra mænd, der ikke var deres brødre, og nogle var ikke engang hinduer. Der er også tilfælde, hvor herskerne, for at beskytte pigen, der engang bandt en rakkha til dem, gik i krig. Ifølge hinduistisk tradition kunne Indra under devaernes og asuraernes krig ikke vinde over den mægtige dæmon Vritra . Først efter at Indras kone havde bundet en silkesnor med særlig kraft om sin mands håndled, besejrede Indra Vritra og vandt sin himmelske bolig tilbage fra asuraerne.
