The Associates  er et britisk rockband dannet i 1979 i Edinburgh , Skotland , og en vigtig del af den lokale new wave- og postpunkscene [ 1] . Bandet udgav 5 studiealbum [2] , hvoraf det mest succesrige, Sulk , nåede #10 i UK Albums Chart i 1982 . Gruppens to første singler havde også succes på listerne: "Party Fears Two" (# 9, 1982) og "Club Country" (# 13, 1982) [3] . The Associates frontmand , Billy McKenzie , hvis sangskrivning og scenetilstedeværelse forudbestemte interesse for gruppen fra musikkritikere, begik selvmord i 1997 [1] .

Gruppehistorik

Bandets historie går tilbage til 1976, hvor Billy McKenzie og guitaristen Alan Rankine, som lige havde mødt hinanden, dannede The  Ascorbic Ones kabaretduo i Dundee . I 1979 indspillede de som Mental Torture, og ændrede derefter deres navn til The Associates [4] . Debutsinglen var et cover af David Bowies "Boys Keep Swinging". Udgivelsen tiltrak sig først og fremmest Bowies opmærksomhed, som selv havde været på hitlisterne med denne sang halvanden måned før.
