Søn af Giacomo II del Balzo , herre over Molfetta, Giovenazzo og Specchia, og Covella di Tocco.
Han modtog grevskabet Alessano fra sin onkel , men accepterede ikke titlen som greve, og fortsatte med at blive kaldt del Balzo. Han var medlem af det kongelige råd under Ferrante I.
