Biografi
Søn af en polsk immigrant. I 1948-1953 studerede han ved Art Institute i Cleveland , i 1953-1955 - ved School of Art and Architecture ved Yale University i New Haven med Josef Albers , ved University of Kent i Kent , Ohio , hvor han modtog en bachelorgrad i 1956 . Han underviste ved universiteterne i Wisconsin , Cornell og Kent.
I 1957 flyttede han til New York , arbejdede som kurator for Museum of Modern Art . Efter at have deltaget i den berømte udstilling "Sensitive Eye", afholdt i 1965 i New York, indtog han en af de førende positioner blandt repræsentanterne for op-art-bevægelsen. I 1960'erne og 1970'erne samarbejdede han med Victor Vasarely og Bridget Riley .
